Buty Winery 2012 Rockgarden Estate Rediviva of the Stones, Walla Walla Valley, $60
Historically, Buty was well ahead of the curve in the Walla Walla Valley when it began to explore creating blends of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, starting with the debut vintage of Rediviva of the Stones in 2001 – a year after launching the brand. At this point in the winery’s history, Nina Buty has seen her basalt cobblestone vineyard attain organic certification, and winemaker Chris Dowsett pulled from Phelps and clone 174 Syrah (78%), Cabernet Sauvignon (13%) and Mourvèdre, with the smallest component of the blend picked last – on Oct. 23. It offers classic Syrah notes from The Rocks of Milton-Freewater with its tones of cured meat, earthiness and saddle leather, joined by blackberry, plum, mocha, toast and a shake of black pepper. The structure is bold, plump and ripe with a rich midpalate, pleasing texture and solid finish of blueberry, chickory and mulberry.
