broVo Spirits NV Pretty Floral Vermouth, Washington, $9

By on February 20, 2016

brovo-pretty-floral-vermouth-nv-bottleWith a bottling program energized by Macklemore, Woodinville spirits maven Mhairi Voelsgen begins her Pretty project with a Pinot Gris base from the arid Wahluke Slope. That wine provides 75% of the final product, which is sparked by botanicals ranging from angelica, cardamom, chamomile, comfrey, elderflower, lemon peel and vanilla bean. This fascinating mixture makes for aromas of dried pineapple, a cup of orange pekoe tea with cream, lemon preserves, juniper and dried herbs. Inside, it’s a trip to a spice market with vanilla and chai swirling in golden raspberries and golden raisins. There’s richness to the midpalate, yet there’s a juiciness and expected yet pleasant heat leading to the off-dry finish from agave nectar, which elevates the residual sugar to 6%. Pretty Floral is available in 187-milliliter bottles at a wide range of retailers in the Puget Sound, including Ballard Market, Total Wine and More, Tacoma Boys, some QFCs, Whole Foods Market at Interbay and Cafe Flora in Madison Park. Look for broVo in the southern part of the Woodinville Warehouse District near Finn Hill Winery.
