Wind Rose Cellars 2013 Lonesome Springs Ranch Sangiovese, Yakima Valley, $22
Olympic Peninsula winemaker David Volmut trained at Yakima Valley Community College and Olsen Estates prior to launching his brand in sun-kissed Sequim, Wash. He fashions this Sangiovese akin to a Super Tuscan by including Cabernet Sauvignon (15%). There’s minimal oak, which keeps the focus on the dark red fruit profile, both in the nose and the palate. Aromas of cherry pie filling, dark strawberry and cranberry carry through to the flavors. Great acidity combines with just enough tannin from the Cab to make for a cherry/vanilla finish. Pair accordingly with lasagna or beef dishes incorporating tomato-based sauces.
