North by Northwest 2013 The Explorer Series Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $25
By Great Northwest Wine on February 23, 2016
Oregon icon King Estate created this brand in order to explore regions in the Northwest beyond the boundaries of the Beaver State, and this trip takes in some of Washington’s most prized vineyards — Heather Hill and Les Collines in the Walla Walla Valley along with Alder Ridge and The Benches in the Horse Heaven Hills. It receives a healthy injection of Merlot (21%) and the 18 months in barrel leads to robust oak notes of French roast coffee and tar with vanilla and pink peppercorns. Inside, it is dominated by ripe fruit flavors of black cherry, Marionberry and red currant, framed by sweet tannins, cinnamon powder and vanilla extract.
