South Stage Cellars 2010 Fortmiller Vineyard Merlot, Rogue Valley, $28
Michael Moore and his parents manage more than 450 acres of vineyard across 13 sites in Southern Oregon. They grow 28 varieties for their customers, and they also work with a variety of winemakers for their own label and tasting room in the quaint town of Jacksonville. John Quinones, a University of California-Davis grad, developed this Merlot for South Stage Cellars not long after he arrived at RoxyAnn Winery in nearby Medford. The nose is generous and dark with cola, plum sauce and black currant amid cinnamon, allspice and black pepper. That sweet spiciness continues as flavors with blackberry and boysenberry, brisk tannins and a savory finish of Kalamata olive.
