Brandborg Vineyard & Winery 2012 Barbera, Umpqua Valley, $26
By Great Northwest Wine on March 3, 2016
Terry and Sue Brandborg left the Bay Area to pursue their passion of working with cool-climate grapes in Southern Oregon’s Umpqua Valley, and their exploration has allowed them to work with small and fascinating properties such as Amaranth Vineyard just north of Roseburg. Their expression with this popular Italian grape opens with rich and penetrating aromas of dark black fruit, toast, smoked ham and fresh shoe leather. The drink is big and spicy with blackberry and black currant as the fruit stays ahead of the plum-skin tannins. Pomegranate acidity, leather and strawberry combine for a rather sexy finish.
