Computer science expert Patrick Merry grew up in California with an appreciation for wine, but his thirst for Washington wine began during his MBA studies at Gonzaga University. He then matriculated to Washington State University and began making wine in the Palouse, using grapes from some of the state’s top vineyards. This vintage marked his 10th, and Stillwater Creek in the Frenchman Hills has been a haven from the start. The warm vintage of 2013 allowed him to take this Merlot during the last week of September, and his use of Hungarian and American oak makes for a bright and spicy yet smooth drink. The theme of Van cherry and red currant includes touches of pink peppercorns and orange pekoe tea. Soft tannins and pleasing acidity make for a juicy finish.
