South Stage Cellars 2012 Vintners Select Red Wine, Rogue Valley, $28
Pallet Wine Co., maven Linda Donovan blended Malbec from Crater View Vineyard and Merlot from Fortmiller Vineyard into a superb red for the Moore family, which manages both sites and pours this wine in their brick-lined tasting room in Jacksonville, Ore. Aromas of blueberry, boysenberry, Jolly Rancher grape candy, black tea and chalkboard dust lead to flavors of Marionberry and black currant. It offers tremendous balance with the nicely managed tannins and juicy acidity, as well as a pinch of sweet herbs and a finish of Aussie-style black licorice. Suggested pairings include cheese such as Asiago, Brie, moked Gouda, manchego and Romano, flank steak, lamb or venison.
