South Stage Cellars 2012 Malbec, Rogue Valley, $28
By Great Northwest Wine on March 11, 2016
Medford winemaker Linda Donovan develops this Malbec from Crater View Vineyard, a site farmed by the Moore family and a short walk from their tasting room in downtown Jacksonville. Its inky dark appearance leads to mincemeat spice aromas with blackberry, black licorice, mint, oregano and white pepper. The flavor profile is a dense presentation of dark black fruit akin to black plum and blackberry, backed by persistent blueberry and a structure bringing a pleasing interplay of tannin and acidity with more dried herbs in the finish. The Moores pair this Malbec with shark, swordfish, buffalo and vegetables such as chard, kale or potatoes.
