Denny Gross made wine as a hobby for more than 30 years, but the Olympic Peninsula sailor got really serious about winemaking starting in 1998. Each year, he releases as many as five red wines and produces just two barrels of each – about 50 cases worth. Traditionally, he’s used his Merlot as a blender, but obviously these barrels from historic Sagemoor Vineyard offered something extra special. Rich and dark cherry aromas include plum, chocolate, baking spices and whiff of jasmine. Inside, it’s generous and juicy with a mouthful of cherries and milk chocolate. Supple tannins – influenced by Syrah (18%) from Kiona – make this extremely balanced and lead to a luscious and long push of cherries.
