Chehalis Valley winemaker Bob Heymann’s connections to the Yakima Valley came via his wife, Flossie, who grew up in the cradle of the Washington wine industry. His cool-climate expression of Syrah opens with massive aromas of blackberry, boysenberry, molasses, chocolate and horehound, backed by hints of cured meat. Inside, it’s far from syrupy with flavors of President plum, blueberry and pomegranate. The pleasing intensity of dark purple fruit features juicy, food-friendly acidity rather than tannin while still offering underlying complexity of more dried meats. This earned a gold medal at the Capital Food and Wine Festival Wine Competition.
