Seven of Hearts 2013 Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, $24
By Great Northwest Wine on March 26, 2016
There’s no new French oak and 30 percent stainless steel fermentation involved with this bottling by Carlton, Ore., winemaker Byron Dooley, who blends Gran Moraine Vineyard fruit from the Yamhill-Carlton appellation with Willakia Vineyard from the Eola-Amity Hills. That allows him to create complex aromas of starfruit, dried apricot, dried pineapple and burlap that lead into an entry of kiwi and honeydew melon flavors. Starfruit and dried apricot return on the midpalate and yield to a finish of green apple taffy and minerality.
