Grower/winemaker Jay DeWitt produces a reserve Cab for Dumas (DOO-Muss) Station when he feels that vintage is worthy. It helps explain why he only bottled one (2010) since the 2007 vintage, but there’s little doubt 2012 ranks as one of the Pacific Northwest’s most balanced of the century. So he pulled from the top of Minnick Hills Vineyard for this, which includes Petit Verdot (8%). There’s a significant investment in the barrel program of 60 percent new oak, which leads to a theme of dark toast and Hershey’s Milk Chocolate with Almonds Bar, black cherry, baking spices and smoky leather. The drink is brimming with cassis, cherry and blackberry flavors that funnel into frontal tannins. Blueberry acidity and toasy oak make for a very enjoyable finish of mint chocolate chip, nutmeg and allspice. Beyond the winery in the historic Walla Walla town of Dayton, look for this at Esquin Wine & Spirits in Seattle.
