Best Buy! Thirty years ago, the late R&B singer Jermaine Stewart made cherry wine a part of the pop world lexicon as the drink of choice within his hit We Don’t Have to Take Our Clothes Off. The latest version of Black Muscat by Tacoma-area winemaker Perry Preston — who opened this winery in 2006 – carries a sense of cherry wine from start to finish, even though the grape variety is a cross of Muscat of Alexandria and Schiava Grossa. Aromas of cherry jam, strawberry candy, cocoa and toasted pine nuts turn into a clean, off-dry and straightforward flavors of Chelan cherry with strawberry. A tiny burst of spritzy acidity helps to balance the residual sugar (2.4%), as does the finish of strawberry-rhubarb compote. It’s a fun little low-alcohol quaffer, especially on a warm spring day.
