Goose Ridge Vineyards 2011 Sol Duc, Columbia Valley, $50
By Great Northwest Wine on April 13, 2016
Sol Duc, a Meritage blend of 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 18% Malbec and 9% Petit Verdot, is the creation of Goose Ridge Vineyards, which is squeezed between Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills on the south, Red Mountain on the northwest and Richland and Kennewick to the east and northeast. Aged in 40% new French oak and 60% used barrels, it’s a sophisticated blend leading off with spicy oak, bright cherries, blackberries and blueberries in its nose, then on its palate. Toward the finish chocolaty tannins emerge, leading to a lingering, juicy finish. This earned a gold medal at the 2016 Cascadia Wine Competition.
