Horizon’s Edge Winery NV Wishful Thinking Chocolate Port, Rattlesnake Hills, $20
By Great Northwest Wine on April 14, 2016
It’s not a traditional fortified wine, but longtime Yakima Valley vintner David Padgett is not your run-of-the-mill producer. There’s intense dark chocolate aromatics akin to a brownie fresh from the oven and a freshly unwrapped Tootsie Roll. The flavors are reminiscent of a lick from a Chocolate Tootsie Pop, backd by caramel and a finish of Nutella. A skilled use of alcohol and tannin balances the residual sugar of 16%. It merited a gold medal at the 2016 Capital Food and Wine Festival judging, just one of several golds earned at that competition during its history.
