Obelisco Estate 2012 Malbec, Red Mountain, $45
Obelisco Estate is the brainchild of Doug Long, who made his fame in California’s Napa Valley before retiring and moving north to retire in Washington. But the need to create never left, so he put together a group to create Obelisco, a Woodinville winery with an estate vineyard on famed Red Mountain. Today, Long is the sole owner of Obelisco. Long’s winemaker is Sarah Goedhart, the head winemaker for Hedges Family Estate, whose winery was among the first on Red Mountain. This gorgeous Malbec uses 100% estate-grown Red Mountain fruit for this wine, which displays its home AVA’s warm-climate, deep fruit. Combined with Malbec’s natural tendency to produce grapes with color from the heart of darkness, this wine shows off deep, dark plum and summer blackberry aromas and flavors, closing with graceful tannins and a hint of black tea. This earned a double gold medal at the 2016 Cascadia Wine Competition.
