Leah Jørgensen Cellars 2014 Tour Rain Vin Rouge, Oregon, $25
Virginia native Leah Jorgensen saw her Loire Valley-inspired red blend from the 2012 vintage finish No. 33 on Great Northwest Wine’s Top 100 Northwest Wines of 2013, and she’s back with her latest graceful expression of Cabernet Franc and Gamay Noir off two sustainably farmed sites. It’s a 55/45 blend of Cab Franc from Herb Quady’s Mae’s Vineyard in the Applegate Valley and Gamay Noir off Havlin Vineyard in the Perrydale Hills – a site in the eastern portion of the Willamette Valley that is cooled by the coastal breezes through the Van Duzer Corridor. The nose brings savory, spice and fruity notes of cassis, plum and black cherry with roasted mushroom and California peppercorns. The flavor profile offers a delicious theme of black cherry, blackberry and plum with a sprinkle of red pepper spice. It’s bright, juicy, silky and complex, capped by a bit of blueberry. Suggested pairings range from pasta to spicy, rich Asian dishes with noodles, smoked salmon, charcuterie and cheese, beet salad, flatbreads and kabobs.
