Nefarious Cellars 2013 Defiance Vineyard Malbec, Lake Chelan, $35
When wine-loving sightseers visit the Neffs at their picturesque estate on the south shore of Lake Chelan, Defiance Vineyard is the planting surrounding the winery. Their early work with Rhône varieties from this site helped establish their reputation, yet this latest release of Malbec is stunning, too. It offers classic Northwest Malbec notes that include aromas of blackberry pie and Jolly Rancher grape candy combined with dusty minerality, dark chocolate, sweet herbs and tar. There’s a remarkable entry of blackberry, black cherry and blueberry across the palate, joined by mild tannins and bright boysenberry acidity. The finish brings a return of that minerality along with lingonberry preserves.
