Columbia Crest 2014 Reserve Unoaked Chardonnay, Horse Heaven Hills, $26
Juan Muñoz Oca’s white wine team at Columbia Crest used an egg-shaped concrete tank in their fascinating approach to a reserve Chardonnay, made with nearby estate fruit. The absence of oak means the aromatics focus on Asian pear, honeydew melon, starfruit, lemon and a sprig of mint. The time in the egg helps make for a rich entry with bright flavors of pear and lemon oil, backed by grapefruit pith, more starfruit and a slice of Granny Smith apple. This ranks among the smallest commercial productions in the Ste. Michelle Wine Estates portfolio, and sales are limited to the tasting room and online. Enjoy with light cheeses and springtime salads.
Rating: Excellent
Production: 75 cases
Alcohol: 14.6%
