There were fewer than 20 wineries in Washington state when Hoodsport entered the industry, and while it produces wines from vinifera, the Puget Sound producer also releases several non-grape bottlings – including two styles of Blueberry. This is the off-dry version, but it’s not overly sweet at just 1% residual sugar. Aromas of blueberry are joined by Western serviceberry, vanilla and milk chocolate with hints of a potpourri bag. Inside, the flavors mimic Marionberry on the entry more than blueberry. There’s a bit of viscosity on the midpalate as blueberry skin tannins and juiciness provide cleansing balance. The two versions are the same price with similar packaging, but this off-dry version lists a touch more alcohol – 11 percent vs. 9 percent.
