Abacela 2013 #UmpquaStrong Red Table Wine, Umpqua Valley, $25
The Umpqua Valley and the community of Roseburg, Ore., were shaken as a result of the Oct. 1 mass shooting at Umpqua Community College, so Earl & Hilda Jones and the team at Abacela wanted to show their support for the recovery effort by creating this special fundraiser bottling for UCC. In less than a week, Abacela sold through all 56 cases of this one-time red blend, which features aromas and flavors of cherry, dried strawberry, thyme and milk chocolate. Firm tannins and pomegranate acidity make this cellar-worthy with good food applications in the short term. And within a month of the promotion, the Joneses presented a cheque of $18,125 to the Umpqua Community College Foundation to help with the recovery effort.
