Quady North 2012 Cabernet Franc, Applegate Valley, $35
The Oregon extension of Central Valley California’s winemaking Quady family, hence “Quady North,” established Mae’s Vineyard in 2006 using Syrah, Viognier and Cabernet Franc. And this less-famous red Bordeaux grape excels in Southern Oregon, to the extent that it dominates Herb Quady’s bottlings of Cab Franc. Those who appreciate the finesse this variety offers will embrace its aromas of light cherry, currant and sweet herbs. There’s a match on the palate, bringing a bit of darkness with pleasing structure that creates a long and stylish finish. The wines are available online and in the Portland market at Zupan’s. Suggested pairings include prime rib, roast lamb and Osso Buco.
