Columbia Crest 2012 Coyote Canyon Vineyard Reserve Syrah, Horse Heaven Hills, $35
By Great Northwest Wine on May 29, 2016
One of Columbia Crest’s favorite sites in the Horse Heaven Hills is rancher/grower/vintner Mike Andrews’ expansive plantings near the northern edge of the American Viticultural Area. Two blocks came together for this bold and dark Syrah, co-fermented with Viognier (3%) and getting a healthy dose of Grenache (8%). The influence of 18 months in new oak, a combination of French and American, leads to aromas of mocha, Pike Place roast coffee, blackberry jam, blueberry and cordial cherry. Flavors of Marionberry and Chukar Cherry hang steady thanks to a pleasing presentation of sandy tannins and that juiciness from Grenache.
