Dusted Valley Vintners 2013 BFM, Columbia Valley, $53
By Great Northwest Wine on May 31, 2016
The goal of brothers-in-law Corey Braunel and Chad Johnson is to make the biggest “freaking” Merlot blend in the state, but the balanced structure offered by Dionysus, Elephant Mountain and StoneTree vineyards doesn’t leave you tongue tied. Aromas hinting at chocolate-covered blueberry, cola nut, vanilla and ground savory lead to sweet blue fruit flavors with black cherry. The tannins are frontal, yet dusty rather than drying, leading to long flavors of black cherry, sweet blueberries and mocha. Considering the blend is Merlot (81%), Cabernet Franc (14%) and Petit Verdot, it offers more smoothness compared with many other Merlots from Washington.
