Diversion Wine Co. 2014 Majestic Red, Washington, $17
Columbia Valley winemaker Katy Michaud, who headed up Covey Run for several years until the purchase by Gallo, worked with Wahluke Slope fruit for this Malbec-heavy blend that includes Syrah (42%) and Petit Verdot. There a panoply of ripe dark purple fruit that begins in the aromas and carries through to the drink, hinting at blackberry, plum and sweet blueberry. Impressive balance of chocolaty tannins and pomegranate acidity allows for notes of slate, cola vanilla in the finish. This wine is being featured in Canada by Liquor Control Board of Ontario, and look for it in restaurants and wine merchants throughout the Pacific Northwest.
