Gordon Taylor dubs Durif as his flagship wine, and Daven Lore’s take on Petite Sirah from Zephyr Ridge Vineyard is far from demure. It began with harvest on Oct. 13 at 23 Brix and includes some contributions from Malbec (7%), Grenache (5%) and Petit Verdot (2%) off Lonesome Spring Ranch. It makes for a brawny and brash wine with bittersweet chocolate, dark toast, malt extract and blackberry aromas. Inside, there’s a fistful of tannins among flavors of blackberry, cocoa, espresso grounds and pomegranate. Suggested fare ranges from Beehive Barely Buzzed Cheese, Short Ribs Provençal, Mahogany Beef Stew and mushroom risotto to moussaka.
