Seven of Hearts 2014 Ice Princess Viognier Sweet Wine, Columbia Valley, $21
Willamette Valley winemaker Byron Dooley takes a portion of his Viognier from Rattlesnake Road Vineyard near the Columbia River in Eastern Oregon, freezes that lot for more than a month then presses it over the course of several days. He’s left with a delicate and delicious dessert wine that’s settled at 14% residual sugar. It doesn’t come off as cloying. Instead, the focus is on aromas and flavors of apricot jam, honey, rose petal and orange marmalade with a finish of golden raisins. Enjoy with a plate of light cheeses, orchard fruit and nuts. These wines are distributed in Oregon by Lemma Wine Co., in Washington by Owen Kotler Selections and in Idaho by Tastevin.

Recently, I’ve had a Thurston Wolfe Viognier and Pinot Gris blend that was spectacular! We’re growing both varietals here at Olalla Vineyard & Winery and we’re going to try that blend as well. Our Viognier does well here in Western Washington.

Coyote Canyon and Martinez Martinez in Prosser have always had delightful Viogniers for me.
