Cadence Winery 2012 Cara Mia Vineyard Camerata, Red Mountain, $60
The estate vineyard for Georgetown vintners Ben Smith and Gaye McNutt, this Cabernet Sauvignon is one of two bottlings they produce from the site they planted in 2004. The aromatic greeting hits on chalkboard dust, cherry jam and cola with blackstrap molasses and a whisper of menthol from the Cabernet Franc (9%). Its structure comes with a firm framing of fine-grained tannins that blossom across the fruity midpalate of black currant, Bing cherry, pomegranate and ripe elderberry. Among its five big Bordeaux reds from Red Mountain, this is Cadence’s most highly prized and is built for the long haul – a wine to be showcased alongside the many great wines from Washington’s most famous AVA.
