Air Force pilots JJ and Kelly Menozzi flew around the world for their country, which also afford them a global view of the international wine industry. After decades of reconnaissance, they chose to retire in the Walla Walla Valley along Mill Creek. As their young estate plantings mature, they’ve chosen to produce their first commercial vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon from nearby Wild Rose and Yellow Bird vineyards. They’ve been working on this project for a while, investing 26 months in two these barrels. That accounts for a big and sweet oak aromatic profile with blackberry and cherry tucked among cinnamon, dark toast, bittersweet chocolate, vanilla bean and espresso. And those tones are mirrored on the palate with bold fruit, broad shoulders of tannin and lingering boysenberry acidity. The Aluvé tasting room is open by appointment, and the Menozzis are a natural fit for the Rising Stars tasting Aug. 26 in Prosser at the Walter Clore Center. They suggest pairing their Cab with their recipe for Steak Fiorentina.
