Gordon Estate 2013 Malbec, Columbia Valley, $24
The Gordon family recently launched this standalone program with Malbec, featuring its historic Kamiak Vineyard overlooking the Snake River and Walla Walla County. It’s a small lot, just three barrels, with new Hungarian oak forming a significant part of that program. That use builds a charming nose of sweet cherries, black currant, chocolate-covered pomegranate and black licorice with jasmine and lavender notes. The palate shows those expected dark purple fruit flavors framed by nicely managed tannins. There’s food-friendly complexity with a fresh bite of celery and cherry tomato. Its boysenberry finish also makes it quite a quaffer, as well as a fit for the menu at the Gordon Estate Wine Bar near Richland.
