Lone Birch 2014 Red Blend, Yakima Valley, $13
By Great Northwest Wine on September 9, 2016
Best Buy! The second label for family-owned and operated Airfield Estates in Prosser, Wash., delivers on this bottling of Merlot (61%), Malbec (19%), Sangiovese (18%), Petit Verdot (1%) and Cabernet Franc (1%). It offers aromas of black cherry, dried blueberry, mint and black pepper. And the palate, there’s a delivery of cherry cola and red currant with an outline of firm tannins and pomegranate acidity. Its lighter and smooth finish brings in strawberry. The Miller family’s success with this wine from the prior vintage drove an increased production for 2014 of nearly 20 percent.
