Lost River Winery 2012 Merlot, Columbia Valley, $25
Winemaker John Morgan was a civil engineer in Bellingham before deciding to open this winery in 2002 in the Methow Valley. It was a good move for him and wine lovers, as he has proven to be one of North Central Washington’s most talented winemakers. This gorgeous Merlot offers aromas of honeycomb, black licorice, black cherry and minerality, followed by jammy and complex flavors of ripe dark fruit that is backed by elegant texture and checks all the boxes that one would expect from a classic Washington Merlot. This won gold and best of class at the 2016 Wenatchee Wine & Food Festival wine competition.
