Airfield Estates 2015 Sweet Riesling, Yakima Valley, $15
Best Buy! Marcus Miller, a product of Walla Walla Community College’s winemaking school, grows 27 varieties across nearly 900 acres of vines on his family’s estate near Prosser, Wash. That gives him the flexibility to develop Riesling in a variety of ways, including this in an off-dry style that Germans might classify as Kabinett. It’s low-alcohol, low pH (2.8), lofty total acidity (9.4) and an appropriate level of residual sugar (5%) for this approach. The nose shows Granny Smith apple, orange, apricot and mustard seed with a whiff of classic Old World diesel. It’s a fruity drink of orange, apricot and nectarine amid a mouth feel that’s full and pleasing. The delicious finish of Italian lime soda with petrol gives the impression that the RS is half of what is listed.
