Longtime Yakima Valley winemaker Flint Nelson offers his own brand – Mazzacano Cellars – in addition to the wines he’s made with Cat Warwick under their nascent Wit Cellars label. That he’s able to purchase Grenache, now one of the state’s most coveted varieties, from Precept’s Canyon Vineyard Ranch near Prosser would indicate that Nelson also is one of the region’s most well-liked personalities. He doesn’t disappoint. Scrumptious aromas of strawberry jam, boysenberry pie and Rainier cherry include mint, moist earth and cinnamon bark. Those tones come through in huge fashion as flavors, making for a bright drink with sandy midpalate tannins. Its remarkable texture includes another slice of boysenberry pie for the finish, and they suggest trying this with grilled salmon. Look for these wines at the Wit Cellars tasting in Prosser.
