Owen Roe 2014 Ex Umbris Syrah, Yakima Valley, $21

owne-roe-ex-umbris-nv-bottleDavid O’Reilly’s entry level into his Owen Roe red program is remarkable on many levels, but a look at the vineyards explains the quality. DuBrul, Red Willow and two estate sites — Outlook and Union Gap — give him the components. His program of 14 months in French oak develops attractive aromas of plum, sugared blackberry, cola and lavender. Those are mirrored on the palate with pleasing balance to the structure, a dash of white pepper and a savory food-friendly finish. This latest release, in a remarkably low-weight bottle, confirms its place in the discussion when it comes to the top value Syrah made in Washington.

Such a great wine, picked it up after reading this review, enjoyed it with grill lamb chops and steamed asparagus. Thank you for the recommendation. Getting a bit burned out on cabs, and loving the Syrahs coming out of Washington. Thank you for directing us on wine, so appreciated!
