Daven Lore Winery 2013 Malbec, Horse Heaven Hills, $29
Gordon Taylor’s winery on the northern slope of Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills continues to produce marvelous Malbec, and this marks the second straight vintage he’s received our top rating for this Bordeaux variety. He took the Malbec from Double Canyon Vineyard on Oct. 9 and blended in Syrah (10%) and Merlot (5%) from Todd Newhouse-farmed vineyards on Snipes Mountain. Elegant oak allows for aromas of sweet toast and Graham cracker with beautiful hints of black currant, dried blueberry, Red Vines licorice and a dusty country road. Delicious blueberry jam flavors are joined by more black fruit, framed by bold acidity and tannins akin to espresso grounds. The long finish features a lick of fresh caramel. He suggests enjoying with Croque Monsieur, roasted winter vegetables, Shepherd’s Pie, stuffed grape leaves, cumin-rubbed steak or chocolate desserts. This wine is available at the winery in Prosser, Yoke’s Fresh Markets throughout the Tri-Cities, All Things Wine in Renton, Green Olive in Sunnyside, Bonnie’s Vine and Gifts in Prosser, Wine Country RV in Prosser, Fred Meyer stores in Oregon and McCormick & Schmick’s restaurants in Oregon and Washington.
