Browne Family Vineyards 2013 Malbec, Columbia Valley, $35
One of the Northwest’s most recognizable vineyards – Klipsun on Red Mountain – joined forces with underrated Doval on the Wahluke Slope and rising star Summit View in the Walla Walla Valley for this expression of 100 percent Malbec. Waterbrook winemaker John Freeman then dialed in a program of 36% new French oak spanning 20 months that provides the framework for a decade of aging. Floral notes of lilac and juniper berry don’t shy away from the dark blue fruit profile, both in the aromas and the flavors. It’s a brisk drink with blueberry and pomegranate acidity, a profile that outshines the pinch of tannins in the finish.
