The classic 2012 vintage in the Pacific Northwest paved the way for many acclaimed wines, and Mercer’s Reserve Cavalie from that year ranked among the region’s most decorated wines. Jessica Munnell’s latest release continues to lead with Merlot (63%), but the contributions by Cabernet Sauvignon (25%) and Malbec (12%) prompted her to leave Petit Verdot out of the mix. No matter. This 2014 seems to be on a similar career path. Sweet oak aromas include blackberry, chocolate, coffee, white pepper and some of the magic chalkboard dust that’s a part of many Horse Heaven Hills wines. The drink is smooth, bright and firm with flavors of black currant, pomegranate and sweet blueberry, backed by dark chocolate. Fortunately, they’ve increased production by about 30 percent. Suggested pairings include filet mignon, lamb, Crêpe with Nutella and strawberries & vanilla ice cream.
