Squirrel Tooth Alice has gotten around. While the previous vintage for this GSM-style blend reached into a couple of top sites on the sultry Wahluke Slope, the 2014 is devoted to Red Heaven Vineyard on hot Red Mountain. And this time, it is led by Mourvèdre (63%) with typical bedfellows Grenache (27%) and Syrah (10%) playing second fiddle. The perfumy features an alluring blend of floral and fruit with violets and rose hips mixing with cherry candy, blueberry and Graham cracker. In the mouth, it’s earthy, spicy and juicy, rolling around with Marionberry and black currants. Its tannins structure is far from tawdry, and lingering acidity combines with black pepper to make it more than hedonistic. Of the five Rhône-inspired big reds from Dusted Valley Vintners, it is the first from Washington’s smallest appellation.
