Nine Hats Wines 2015 Benches Vineyard Pinot Gris, Horse Heaven Hills, $14
Most of the wines produced in Walla Walla are delicious, but few brands in the entire Northwest offer the bargains that Gilles Nicault continues as part of his work with Long Shadows Vintners. Their erstwhile estate vineyard, The Benches near McNary Dam, provide the tropical style often associated with Washington-based Pinot Gris. Ripe aromas of pineapple and Uncola that include Honeyscrip apple and Bartlett pear do not mislead when it comes to flavors. Apricot skin and lingering quince acidity give it enough tartness to balance a dish with cream or cheese. While the 2016 vintage has recently been released, the 2015 bottling continues to shine.
