Angel Vine 2013 The Hellion Red Wine, Columbia Valley, $24
Ed Fus grows some Pinot Noir in Oregon’s Eola-Amity Hills, but he focuses his winemaking on Italian varieties such as Zinfandel and Primitivo. Because of that, he sources most of his 2,000-case production in downtown Portland from renowned sites in Washington state such as StoneTree, Coyote Canyon and Alder Ridge. This jaunty blend of Primitivo (46%), Petite Sirah (29%) and Zinfandel is named for daughter Alex, and it tracks along the same lines as the prior vintage — with similar appeal. Spicy aromas of nutmeg, clove, orange oil and Horse Heaven Hills dust lead to bright flavors of Van cherry and orange zest with oregano.
