Mercer Estates 2014 Ode to Brothers Reserve Red Blend, Horse Heaven Hills, $42
One of Washington’s best pockets for grapes is the Mercer family’s Spice Cabinet Vineyard along the southern slope of the Horse Heaven Hills, and among the industry’s best trends are Rhône-inspired blends. Jessica Munnell put together this GSM blend of Grenache (25%), Syrah (39%) and Mourvèdre (36%), which offers a lively nose of pomegranate, plum, pepper from the Mourvèdre and the dusty minerality often found in Horse Heaven Hills wines. Its structure produced from whole-berry fermentation seems Grenache-driven with racy raspberry and black currant juice, backed by lingering blueberry skin tannins. They’ve doubled production from the previous vintage.
