Spindrift Cellars 2014 Barrel Select Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, $30
Matt Compton marked the 10th anniversary of his boutique winery in Philomath, Ore., with the 2014 vintage, and the Garden State native maintains his focus of working with tiny lots from focused vineyards. In this case, he blends Pinot Noir clone 777 fruit from Thompson Vineyard with 667 berries off Bovine Vineyard for a drink of style and finesse that opens with aromas of strawberry taffy, cherry candy, vanilla and minerality. Fresh and youthful flavors lead with raspberry and red currant that are met by elegant tannins akin to Rainier cherry skins and finished with pink strawberries. Enjoy with lighter dishes or Tabitha Compton’s recipe for Bacon Stuffed Mushrooms.
