Pomum Cellars 2013 Red Wine, Columbia Valley, $24
Pomum Cellars is the flagship brand for Javier Alfonso, who also shines in Woodinville with his Spanish-themed Idilico label, and here he focuses this Left Bank Bordeaux-style blend on two sub-apps of the Yakima Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon from Upland Vineyard on Snipes Mountain and Cabernet Franc from Dineen Vineyard in the Rattlesnake Hills make up two thirds, with the balance in Merlot (17%), Malbec (9%) and Petit Verdot. Aromas of boysenberry, Van cherry and chalkboard dust lead to darker fruit tones of blackberry and black cherry on the palate. There’s integrity to the tannin structure that leads out with a layer of cherry pie filling juiciness.
