HOOD RIVER, Ore. – Second-generation winemaker Adam Campbell ranks among the West Coast elite with his award-winning work for Elk Cove Vineyards with cool-climate reds and whites in the Willamette Valley.
This week, he raised the profile for his family’s latest project as the Pike Road Wines 2016 Pinot Gris earned best of show honors at the fifth annual Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition. The $16 bottle topped the field of a record 644 entries nominated by a select panel of regional wine buyers. They met at the historic Columbia Gorge Hotel to judge some of the best wines from Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and Idaho.
“My family has always had a real reverence and passion for white wines in Oregon,” Campbell said. “Sometimes, I think that gets lost in the excitement for Pinot Noir. There are other great cool-climate grapes in Oregon besides Pinot Noir.”
Judges at the competition organized by Great Northwest Wine selected the Huston Vineyards 2015 Malbec as the event’s best red wine. It was among seven wines made with grapes from the Snake River Valley in Idaho to be awarded a gold medal.
“Holy smokes. What an accolade!” said Huston Vineyards owner Gregg Alger. “For the Snake River Valley to have this kind of exposure with those kinds of contacts in the wine industry is huge. To have an Idaho red wine win best red in the Northwest is pretty amazing. I hope that it helps move the needle for what’s happening with red grapes in this state.”
14 Hands, Milbrandt, Kiona lead top categories
Best rosé of the competition was awarded to the Milbrandt Vineyards 2016 Rosé ($13), and the award for top sparkling wine went to 14 Hands Winery for its nonvintage Brut ($12). Winning the best sweet wine category was the Kiona Vineyards Winery 2016 Chenin Blanc Ice Wine from Red Mountain.
Other top awards included Upchurch Vineyard for its 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, a young estate project on Red Mountain by DeLille Cellars founding winemaker Chris Upchurch and his wife, Thea; Mt. Hood Winery in the Columbia Gorge for its 2014 Estate Pinot Noir, and Yamhill Valley Vineyards near McMinnville, Ore., for its 2015 Estate Riesling.
British Columbia reds win 11 gold medals
The wines of British Columbia found an appreciative audience with the judging panel, which awarded 16 gold medals to Canadian entries, four of those being unanimous double golds. Perhaps even more impressive was that 11 of those gold medals went to work with red wines, including six focused on Bordeaux varieties.
See Ya Later Ranch near Okanagan Falls, BC, received the best red blend for its 2015 Ping ∼ Meritage Red Wine. Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery in Oliver earned the award for best white blend.
Howard Soon, one of Canada’s most respected winemakers, heads up Vannessa Vineyard Estate Winery in the cooler Similkameen Valley west of the Okanagan Valley. His 2013 Meritage and 2013 Syrah each merited a gold medal.
Brandborg rewarded for cool-climate varieties
Wines made from cool-climate grapes resonated with the judging panel throughout the two-day competition, and Umpqua Valley producers Terry and Sue Brandborg earned gold medals with their Brandborg Vineyard & Winery 2014 Love Puppets Pinot Noir, 2014 Gewürztraminer and 2015 Riesling.
James and Poppie Mantone of Syncline Winery in the Columbia Gorge earned praise for three of their Rhône-inspired wines, each from a different growing region in Washington.
Hood River native Rich Cushman produced three gold medals as his clients include Mt. Hood Winery and the young Stave & Stone Wine Estates.
The Williams family at Kiona Vineyards Winery showed their talent and versatility on warm Red Mountain with gold medals for its 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2015 Fortunate Sun Estate Late Harvest Chenin Blanc and its best-of-class ice wine.
Walla Walla’s Chuck Reininger claimed three gold medals, including one under the Helix label that he recently opened a tasting room for in downtown Spokane.
Judges crown 2 Cabs by Woodward Canyon
Walla Walla Valley icon Woodward Canyon merited gold medals for its two prized Cabs from the 2014 vintage – the Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon and Artist Series #23 Cabernet Sauvignon.
Passing Time Winery, the Woodinville winery owned by retired NFL quarterbacks Damon Huard and Dan Marino, earned two gold medals, including one for their yet-to-be-released 2014 Red Wine.
McMinnville winemaker Ariel Eberle’s deft touch with cool-climate grapes showed as Yahmill Valley Vineyards earned golds for her Riesling bottlings from the 2014 vintage as well as the best-of-class 2015 Riesling and the 2014 Tall Poppy Single Block Designate Pinot Noir.
Talent Cellars, a new winery in the Southern Oregon town of Talent, turned heads with gold medals for its first two released wines — a 2014 Cab and its 2014 Nuf Sed Red.
Perhaps the bargain of the competition is the Raylee Wines 2015 Pinot Noir, a $15 bottling by Ryan Huett, a recent transplant from Costa Rica. In August, that same wine also earned a double gold medal at the Oregon Wine Competition.
Ste. Michelle Wine Estates amassed 10 gold medals as result of entries by 14 Hands, Chateau Ste. Michelle, Columbia Crest, Drumheller, Seven Falls, Spring Valley Vineyards and Tenet.
Full Pull shines at Great Northwest Invitational
Customers of Full Pull Wines, a wine retailer in Seattle, might enjoy knowing that four of the wines crafted specifically for them received a gold medal.
Woodinville winemaker Morgan Lee of Covington Cellars/Two Vintners produced golds with his Block Wines 2015 Discovery Vineyard Block 1 Cabernet Sauvignon, the Block Wines 2015 Ankleroller Block Stoney Vine Vineyard Syrah and the Block Wines 2015 Boushey Vineyard Golden Block Grenache.
Christian Grieb of Treveri Cellars near Yakima also generated a gold medal for the nonvintage Marchant Vineyard Farmhouse Block Extra Brut Rosé of Pinot Noir.
Editor’s note: At no point during the competition did Full Pull owner Paul Zitarelli, a member of the judging panel, evaluate an entry by his Block or Full Pull & Friends brands.
Huston Vineyards shows Malbec’s promise in Idaho
Alger, who named his brand for the tiny community near his tasting room on Chicken Dinner Road, has earned a reputation in Idaho for Malbec. His 2012 vintage earned best of show at the 2014 Idaho Wine Competition. Production of Malbec has varied based on the vintage, but the consistently quality for his red wines can be attributed to the winemaking of Melanie Krause, who works with Alger on the Huston wines at her Cinder Wines facility near Boise.
Krause, a former Chateau Ste. Michelle assistant winemaker, also earned a gold medal for her Cinder Wines 2016 Off-Dry Riesling. Last month, that same wine won best of show at the Idaho Wine Competition. In March, it received best of class at the Cascadia International Wine Competition.
For Huston Vineyard, Krause produced 500 cases of 2014 Malbec. However, an early biting freeze in November 2014 resulted in a smaller harvest of Malbec in 2015, just 260 cases.
“It was a tricky year with some minor winter damage that made for really low yields on some varieties including Malbec,” Krause wrote in a text message.
Vines throughout the Snake River Valley rebounded in 2016, especially those near the cinder cone at Sawtooth Vineyard, a sweet spot for Alger’s Malbec. He expects to release 650 cases of his 2016 Malbec in 2019.
“I think this award reiterates that Idaho is a special place to grow reds,” Alger said. “We just need to continue to channel things such as site selection and growing practices to help us get through these winter issues.”
As Pike Road branches out, Elk Cove turns estate-only
This week’s judging confirmed Campbell’s standing as one of the Northwest’s premier producers of Pinot Gris. The fifth-generation farmer earned gold medals at the Great Northwest Invitational for the Elk Cove 2016 Pinot Gris and Elk Cove 2016 Estate Pinot Blanc.
“We have a long history with Pinot Gris made in that style, and I want to make it in a style very similar to my dad’s style – whole-cluster pressing and really cool fermentations for 50 days in jacketed stainless steel,” Campbell said. “We finish it fairly dry and refreshing with stone fruit notes like peach.”
Campbell’s parents, Pat and Joe, founded Elk Cove Vineyards in 1974. Their own plantings near Gaston, Ore., allowed them to bottling those first wines, but demand prompted them to begin purchasing fruit in 1978. Starting with the 2017 vintage, all of the Elk Cove wines will be fully transitioned to 100 percent estate fruit, a remarkable full circle.
And yet, the Campbells didn’t want to leave behind their cherished relationships with acclaimed growers such as Dick Shea, so they developed the concept for Pike Road.
“We think of it not as a second label for Elk Cove but as a sister winery,” Campbell said.
As a result, they created a tasting room in downtown Carlton dedicated to Pike Road. Elk Cove wines are not poured there, and consumers won’t find Pike Road wines at the Campbells’ tasting room atop Mount Richmond. Pike Road, which began with the 2014 vintage, operates its own wine club, and the lineup includes a Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir.
Pike Road will continue to include fruit from the Campbell family’s 380 acres of vineyards. In fact, associate winemaker Heather Perkin, who spearheads the Pike Road wines, pulled most, but not all, of the Pinot Gris from the Campbells’ vines.
“So I guess we’ve got some good growers we should thank, too,” Campbell quipped.
Campbell said his growing responsibilities for overseeing his family’s six vineyards within a 20-mile radius have placed much of the day-to-day winemaking duties for both brands on the shoulders of Perkin. Pike Road’s total production stands at about 20,000 cases, and the wines are available in 20 states, including Florida and Texas.
“We’re finding some great success as glass pours at top-end restaurants, and it’s in some wine shops and specialty grocers,” Campbell said.
Judges nominate wines for Great Northwest Invitational
The Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition features a format unique to the Pacific Northwest in that it involves influential wine professionals who nominate up to 100 Pacific Northwest wines. Great Northwest Wine then contacts the wineries to see if they want to have their wines judged under a blind conditions by these wine buyers.
“Having a full five tiers of deductive selection with multiple industry vets tasting each of the wines as they progressed up the ladder really solidified the credibility of the results,” said Doug Zellers, co-owner and general manager of historic Ray’s Boathouse, Café and Catering in Seattle. “The end result in essence becomes a very well-vetted ‘buying guide’ for wine professionals in every segment of the industry.
“It’s invaluable to get to taste wineries of all price points at every level of craftsmanship without label prejudice or sales/incentive tactics,” Zellers added. “I know I certainly learned a lot of wineries that I may not have been exposed to without the Great Northwest Wine pulling an event like this together. And I will be telling this same story to my peers, ensuring they lean on our results when placing wines in their programs.”
This year’s judging panel included:
- Naomi Boutz, owner and wine director of Vine and Olive in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
