Mercer Canyons 2014 Red Blend, Horse Heaven Hills, $14
The Mercer family, sparked by the winemaking talents of Washington State University grad Jessica Munnell, is growing this refreshed brand across the nation. Wines of this quality at such a price point bode well for the future. This six-variety blend is steered by Merlot (59%), but there are delectable contributions by Syrah (16%), Grenache (10%), Sangiovese (7%), Petit Verdot (6%) and Viognier from Spice Cabinet and Dead Canyon sites. The 17 months in French and American oak offers a charry entry with roasted coffee, black cherry ice cream, grilled blackberry, mocha and vanilla. On the palate, it takes on a much more fruit-forward approach with a smooth and steady stream of sweet blueberry and black currant. Plump blackberries, pleasurable tannins and ample acidity make this nicely balanced with a long farewell.
