Luke 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, Wahluke Slope, $25
For decades, Thomas Vogele has sold bottles for some of the continent’s highest-profile wineries. In 2012, he began to develop his own brands, starting with Luke. There’s the mystical tale of a man named “Luke” surrounding the label, while what’s inside the bottle features his growing relationship with the Wahluke Wine Co., and the Milbrandt brothers. The story stems from some of their top plantings — Clifton Hill, Northridge and Ravencliff. Brooding aromas of dark plum and fig carry a touch of smoke, herbal notes and rose petal. The density of the color comes through to the lush and pleasing structure of blackberry jam, bittersweet chocolate and lingering espresso tannins, backed by elderberry acidity. Suggested pairings call for flavorful meats such as roasted duck, lamb burgers, pot roast and grilled steak.
