This band of brothers — Matt Marshall, Ryan Marshall and Sean Davis — established their vineyard and brand in 2011 in Oregon’s Yamhill-Carlton American Viticultural Area. They sought to offer their fans more than Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from their 6-acre vineyard, so Davis began making big reds from stellar sites such as acclaimed Seven Hills Vineyard. Alluring toasted oak aromas wave in dark cherry, black currant, bittersweet chocolate and a spring of mint. It’s deliciously bright on the palate as huckleberry and cassis lead into firm yet nicely managed tannins, held up by a lingering chocolaty finish. These wines are available through distributors such as Hayden Beverage in Idaho and Consulon in Oregon, but their wines are available to be tasted at their family’s lively “wine pub” in downtown Carlton, the Horse Radish. Locals know it simply as the “The Ho Rad.”
