Sean Hails continues to grow the portfolio in Washington State for E. & J. Gallo, and his latest releases are impressive, including this GSM blend of Syrah (69%), Grenache (21%) and Mourvèdre. There’s an amazing assortment of deep purple fruit from beginning to end, opening with blueberry jam, plum and vanilla, joined by complex earthiness from the Mourvèdre. Deep blackberry and rich blueberry flavors pick up a pinch of baking spices. Some hedonism comes with a dab of cherry liqueur that’s finished with blueberry skin tannins and rewarding acidity. It’s part of Columbia Winery’s Blend Series, and the foursome is available online as well as at the Woodinville tasting room.
